Interview with Angela Johnson - June 2005 (E)
SP. Your new album 'Got To Let It Go' is your second solo album for Dome Records, are you excited ?

I'm very excited! I'm relieved that it's out now. I felt some pressure to follow up my first album. The pressure came from within.

SP. Can you describe the sound and the music style on 'Got To Let It Go' ?

This album is more R&B than the previous. It's more up beat. Each track has it's own distinctive sound to keep the album on an constant flow. There's something on it for everybody. I've also featured other vocalists on the album.

SP. You are half part of Cooly's Hot Box, and a much used studio-singer as well, how do you find time for all this ?

Believe me, it doesn't allow much for personal time. Somehow, it works out. I only get involved in projects worthwhile. The track or song has to be something special.

SP. You sing, play keyboard, produce, plus you have written and arrange all 12 songs by yourself, are you a true independent woman ?

I'm proud to say that I can be independent when the time calls for it. It's a lot hats to wear in the studio and it can be taxing. I do seek help in areas I'm not familiar with. I'm secure enough to do that.

SP. On top of that you also play the violin, how come you don't do It on the album?

Honestly, when I recorded the first album, I wanted to use a string section. I ended up doing it myself not to prove anything, but it was a matter of getting the album completed. This time around, I've been out of practice, since my daughter came into my life. Instead of putting down strings that I would not be satisfied with, why not use a graduate of the famed Julliard School. Arranging was enough of a job for me.

SP. I guess you have many fans In the UK and therefore naturally will do several live dates there, but where can you also be seen ?

II'll be performing at the Jazz Cafe, June 6th and at Ollie's in Ascot on the 8th. If your in the states anytime soon, I'll be performing in New York at the Blue Note. It's a busy year, but I'll be traveling quite a bit. You can visit my web site and learn about tour dates at www.angelajohnson.com.

SP. You have worked and toured with many big names including Neville Brothers, BB King, Rahsaan Patterson and DJ Spinna, anyone you would 'die' for to play, sing or tour with ?

Oh, there are quite a few. Al Green is touring and I would love to get the opportunity to open for him. Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin are other favorites. If I could work with them in any capacity, I'll die a happy woman.

SP. Which brings me to my last question - will you tell us your top 10 favourite albums?

Whoa! I'd rather you ask top 10 artists of all time. That would be easier. :-) There are so many great albums. I'd really have to think. Well, believe me this is in no specific order. I'm still discovering great works of art as I grow in this business. I'll do my best....These albums are the most influential in my life, so far....
