Your new album Love´s Drippin´ has just been released on your own label Kitchen Records, how is the album doing?
Still in the beginning stage -- and happy to say the response says that with
the right support it could realize itself in a lot of hearts... It will be
released in Japan on August 25th and I'm working on other possibilities.
You have recently done some gigs in London, how was the response to your new material?
In London, I always feel that the service I extend is always doubly returned
both in spirit and in honest appreciation of the atmosphere that my music
creates.
At your website the first thing that shows up is a note to your listener,
where your state that you are a sensualist, explain that.
The note is a preface to now my first chapter of my "sensual ministry"-
meaning, I would say clearly, that since the "I Want You" album there has
been in essence, a ministry developing -- and I'm proud to say at this point that
I now realize the manifestation and am looking forward to helping others
realize the first "ism" of all as being from Catholoism to Buddhism -- should be
"sensualism" because it there from whence to come. I do look forward to making
that point - that simple reality - as rich and respected and honored - as
much as any religion on earth.
Some of your earlier albums are being sold for big amounts and several of
your classic tracks have been sampled by many hip- hop acts , how do you
feel about that?
Very very good -- because it gives the work another life - another attitude
and as all music can be multi-interpreted - this is just another way we arrived
at for now. As far as the big amounts paid - that's totally out of my
control - but just for the record , please inform me what is being charged.
You have done some work with Swedish soul/r&b singer Eric Gadd, could you
tell us about that?
We got together thru a relationship with Ramone Hervey who was acting as
Eric's manager at the time and we had a wonderful creative spell which resulted
in two or three songs - one of which is on his current CD
called "Never Enough" -- -I hope he realizes the support that will see his
work realize it's potential - and I hope we will continue our creative
relationship.
You´ve worked with all the legendary names like Marvin, The Isley
Brothers, Smokey Robinson etc. do you reckon you got the credit for It?
Just for the record, I've never worked with Smokey, but I have worked with
almost everybody at Motown in one way or another - as a producer or writer -
starting with the Isley Bros. - Marvin, The Miracles and a host of others --as
well as outside of Motown - Minnie Riperton, Quincy Jones and many, many
others....I've been blessed. My name is on everything I've done - but the bank
account doesn't show the returns as very few artists have realized the rewards of
their efforts in the history from Michaelangelo etc.....
You also write children´s books , could you tell us about that?
I'm in the process of finishing my first adventure - called "SAFARI BLUE"
which will hopefully be a continuing series- the story is of a little boy from
another world who teaches the people that he meets that
the spirit is all you need in overcoming your adverstities and challenges
I've had this idea 25 years or so -- has been on my back-burner and now with
the help of some other collaborators I will have the first adventure finished
this year.
What´s in the future musically for you as an soul artist?
As an artiste -- I feel the future is excitingly rich -- because I am
realizing the never-ending possibilities...and ideas that i find myself
looking forward to -- from soul music to jazz and possibly even some scores
and some theatre musical....fortunately, soul music has been the basis thru
which my appetite and thirst for the vast musical experience
has no end....I even have a symphony in me ...my resources are full - at
least three lifetimes...would suffice...
Could you do us your personal top 10 of all albums?
Erroll Garner's "Concert By The Sea"
Miles Davis "JazzTrack"
Nat King Cole - "They Try To Tell Us We're Too Young"
Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On"
EWF's - album with "After The Love Is Gone"
Minnie Riperton's - "Adventures In Paradise"
Quincy Jones' " "Body Heat"
Marvin Gaye's I WANT YOU,,,,,
of course MY "Taste The Love" (special to me)
