You´re last r&b-soul album was "Deep Inside" released in 1994, what have you been up to in meantime?
Since the release of Deep Inside, I recorded an album on a new group by the name of Brothaz By Choice in 1996-1997. I also released a gospel album entitled Faithful and True in 2001.
Now you´re back with a "best of" album and a new track title "Exotic Lover", is there more to come?
Yes there is. I plan to complete a gospel compilation with 2 new songs on it within the next year and, thereafter, I plan to complete another R&B album.
What are your expectations for your new album?
Hopefully, Exotic Lover will make an impact, and people that have followed my career will be able to have a CD with a lot of their favorite songs on it.
You have done exceptional music for more than 30 years and I guess that you will keep on for the next 30 years as well?
I plan to keep recording music as long as I have good ideas.
What are the chances for a new super hit like "Caravan Of Love"?
I'm always looking for that. Perhaps Exotic Lover or the new track I'm working on will be able to achieve that status.
The track "Like I Do" does it have the same potential as "Caravan Of Love" in your opinion?
I think it could have. However, the lyrical content is different. But, as far as musical content, I believe they are on the same level.
Any chance that Chris Jasper will be teaming up with The Isley Brothers again?
I think it is safe to say that their direction is different than mine, which makes it unlikely that that would happen.
What Is the best track you ever did during the Isley years?
Probably "For The Love of You," although other songs are equally important from an artistic and compositional standpoint, like "Let Me Down Easy," "I Once Had Your Love," and "Between The Sheets." (I note the last one because of the last musical section which I added after the song was completed and I felt it needed something different at the end to carry the song to the end. This was done basically with a drum machine and keyboard parts.)
Your best solo track?
I can't just name one because I have several. "Superbad" was the first single from my first solo project, which happened to be a #1 record here in the U.S. It had a very positive lyrical message, which encouraged education. "Like I Do" which appears on the "Best Of" album is another one of my favorites. "One Time Love," which also appears on this album is a favorite of mine. And, I guess I would add "Exotic Lover" to this list of favorites, as well.
Finally could you give soulportal.dk your all time favorite top 10 albums?
My all-time favorite top ten albums (not necessarily in that order):
1. Music of My Mind (Stevie Wonder)
2. What's Goin' On (Marvin Gaye)
3. Innervisions (Stevie Wonder)
4. Stand (Sly and the Family Stone)
5. The Best of The Temptations
6. Hot Buttered Soul (Isaac Hayes)
7. The Heat is On (Isley Brothers)
8. Light Up The Night (Brothers Johnson)
9. Thriller (Michael Jackson)
10. Superfly (Curtis Mayfield)
There are many other albums and artists, like Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, and other Motown artists (Smokey Robinson), that have made an impression on me and have had an influence on my music.
