1. Your debut album "Get It" contains a style of music you call Grit Soul, what Is that?
I consider Grit Soul to represent a new and futuristic R&B sound. The music that really moves me always has some grit to it. Something unexpected and funky and soulful. I could never say that my music doesn't borrow from sounds of old, but I try to present my ideas in unconventional ways. In some cases it's the rhythm section or vocal arrangements or song structure.
2. You wrote and produced the album yourself, for how long have you worked on the album?
I made this record over 2 years of weekends and evenings. I had a pretty demanding corporate job, and so every moment I wasn't working was spent writing and experimenting and ultimately recording. It also took me longer because I was a real novice at the recording process. I should have as much of a learning curve next time around.
3. Who inspired you to "invent" the grit soul sound?
Mostly the sound came together from experimenting and relying on my ear. I'm not a formally trained musician so when I sit down at the keyboard, I'm not influenced by what you're supposed to do or what makes sense based on music theory or convention. There is an artist I particularly love who is a fantastic musician and very experimental in soul, rock and pop and her name is Jane Child. I love what she does and it's very inspiring to me musically.
4. The album Is released through your own label Anonka, did you try some of the major labels at first?
No I didn't approach major labels and still haven't really gone down that road. I felt strongly that I wouldn't be able to go with my gut and make the kind of record I really wanted to with so many others to answer to. I'm open to what may happen from here, but I really wanted to see the way people would react to a pure representation of my musical vision.
5. It seems that there´s a lot of female soulsingers putting their music out on there own labels these days, (yourself, Kim Hill, Alison Crockett etc) how come do you think?
I think others may have had more experience than I in terms of the disappointments of dealing with a major. I think it mostly has to do with the incredible gamble you take in depending on major labels to do what's right and put music first. These are corporations run by mostly unmusical people. There under intense pressure not to take chances for the most part. I applaud the woman who are trying to make there way. The flip side is that the independent route is very expensive and difficult to maintain and grow and get the word out.
6. You have opened concerts for Motown´s India Arie, how was that?
I was only able to do that once and it was great. It was when she first came out and there was a really eager and open audience for new R&B/Soul so I had a great time and had great energy from the crowd.
7. You also done some work with Burnt Sugar, can you tell us about them?
Burnt Sugar is a 15-20 piece collective of musicians and vocalists who perform conducted improvisation which was started by Butch Morris. Greg Tate is the conductor for Burnt Sugar. Its a project I've been apart of for 4 years and it's starting to gain momentum. It's very unique in that we have multiple drummers, guitarists, string players, DJ's, and Bass players along with myself and several vocalists, creating music on the spot and responding to everyone's new ideas. Burnt Sugar will be performing in Spain and France in March. Check out www.burntsugarindex.com
